#RedForEd is strong as Oakland, San Ramon Valley win historic victories By Julian Peeples O R S E V E N D A Y S in late February, the 3,000 members of the Oakland Education Associ- ation (OEA) went on strike to fight for the schools that Oakland students deserve, win- ning a historic contract, sparking a community movement, and shining a national spotlight on the destructive impacts of school privatization on neigh- borhood public schools. With the OEA strike coming on the heels of the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) strike in January, #RedForEd spread from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area. e struggle captivated the community of Oakland, as educators walked out of their classrooms and onto picket lines on Feb. 21 after two years of fruitless nego- tiations, and tens of thousands of parents, students and other supporters joined them on the picket lines and in 3,000 Oakland Education Association (OEA) members picket at 87 school sites, joined by students, parents and community supporters.
