For our full social media directory, see #OurVoiceOurUnion #WeAreCTA @WeAreCTA @WeAreCTA WeAreCTA F O R K I D S , the summer break is often as busy as when school is in session, what with camps, summer school and other activities. Let students and their families know that reading, such as these recommendations from CTA's California Reads program (, is well worth making time for. Teacher-vetted books include: The Other Boy, by M.G. Hennessey and illustrated by Sfe R. Monster (grades 6-8), is a heartfelt story about a 12-year-old boy 's journey toward acceptance. Shane Woods loves pitching for his baseball team, working on his graphic novel, and hang- ing out with his best friend, Josh. But he is keeping something private, and when a classmate threatens to reveal his secret, Shane's world is upended. It will take a lot of courage for Shane to ignore the hate and show the world that he's still the same boy he was before. In Gratitude Is My Superpower, by Alicia Ortego (grades 1-2), Little Betsy has a magic stone that helps her feel gratitude for her parents, friends and toys. When she forgets to use the stone, she comes to realize that the power of gratitude is hidden in her heart. The book helps children appreciate what they have and what others do for them. Includes a Gratitude Journal. Esperanza thought she would always live a privileged life on her family 's ranch in Mexico, with fancy dresses, a beautiful home filled with servants, and a loving family. But as told in Esperanza Rising, by Pam Muñoz Ryan (grades 6-8), a sudden tragedy forces her and Mama to flee to California and settle in a farm labor camp. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard work, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When Mama gets sick and a strike for better working conditions threatens to uproot their new life, she must find a way to rise above her di•icult circumstances — because Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.
