Voters Continued from page 28 ing $10 million annually that will prevent 140 teacher layoffs and pay for counselors, librarians and athletics in the 31,000-stu- dent West Contra Costa Unified School District. “We are overjoyed at the commitment of the community to keep investing in our students, teachers and schools,” said Pixie Hayward Schickele, president of United Teachers of Richmond, whose members worked phone banks and walked precincts for Measure D. “Without this local fund- ing, our students and programs would be devastated. Teachers turned out in record numbers to work to make this happen.” Taking their activism one step further, many CTA members — including retired members — won seats on various school boards around the state. The following is a sampling of these educators and the CTA chapters that helped to elect them: Tom Marc Liebman, superinten- dent of the Berryessa Union School District in San Jose, ad- dresses a news conference about the need to pass local school bonds and parcel taxes. This summer, again working with staff, the chapter began to look into changing the board of trustees for the district. They revived their Political Action Committee, raised $3,000 in a local fund-raiser, and obtained another $11,000 from CTA’s ABC fund for mailers, signs and a billboard. “The school board was shocked that we would do this after having reached a contract settlement,” says Ed Hilton, PAC chairperson and middle school math teacher. “But they haven’t been listening to the community, or to teachers, or to parents. We’re hoping to have a more collaborative relationship with the board in the future.” Dina martin 32 California Educator | november 2008 CTA photo by Mike Myslinski
