"Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest." W. E. B. These schools were in communities serving our most at-risk youth—where the students were predominantly English learners and overwhelmingly poor. Unfortunately, in a time when politicans seemed to care more about test scores than the test takers, these students were the children being left behind. So CTA educators partnered with then state Senator Tom Torlakson to provide real growth opportunities for these students. The Quality Education Investment Act of 2006 was the largest teacher-led school improvement and research effort of its kind, and on June 30 it is officially coming to an end. But the lessons we've gleaned from this unprecedented effort can help to shape the learning environment for students across the country.
