e California Council for Adult Education's annual confer- ence takes place April 21-23 in San Francisco. is year's theme is "Adult Education: e Bridge to College, Careers, and Com- munity," and the conference offers workshops, speakers, and other professional development opportunities. Several sessions are devoted to the $500 million Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG), which supplies funding for public adult education programs. Almost all the funds have been distributed to regional consortia of adult schools, com- munity colleges, and other organizations that serve adults. e consortia are determining what programs their communities need and how to implement them. "We'll look at what's next with AEBG," says Neil Kelly of the Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, describing the panel discussion he plans to lead along with a representative from the California Department of Education. "The student data r e p o r t i n g , a c c o u n t - a bi lity m e a su re s a n d other items are not all decided. But they might b e b re a k i n g i n [ m i d - April], so we're hoping to share news in real time." Adult schools offer classes to state residents who are not pre- pared for community college or who don't qualify for skilled jobs. ey serve immigrants, the unemployed, disabled adults, high school dropouts and ex-offenders.
