When he was laid off in 2003, the Bakersfield Elementary Teachers Associ- ation helped him get hired back. He had taken his union for granted, he says, but not anymore. The "walk-ins" demonstrated support for public education, educational justice and equity, and access to school resources and oppor- tunities.
