Insurance information from the Member Benefits website. in district administrators and HR staff — much like an actual interview panel — who share their perspectives about important qualities they want in new hires. ey also answer questions about how job applicants should present themselves during interviews. "It was so refreshing," says student teacher Ellie Blanchard. "ey didn't just say clichés like 'Be yourself ' or advise you to turn a personal weakness into a strength. ey also gave us detailed information about how to apply for jobs online. It was great, because they were really trying to help us." FOOD, FRIENDSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIPS After each workshop, students are handed a "certificate of com- pletion as evidence of professional growth" to submit to their credential program. ey are also treated to dinner, which gives APLE members and student teachers a chance to socialize and become friends. Student CTA memberships are handed out as gifts. Over dinner, the benefits of joining their local CTA chapter in the future are a hot topic. "e professionalism that I've seen with APLE has been amaz- ing," says Blanchard, who plans to teach science. "ey have set the standard for us. ey lead by example." APLE support has prompted many of the young teachers to seek work in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District after graduation, says Manion, who also serves as the Orange Service Center chair. And that will be a boon during the teacher shortage. "APLE's outreach has offered me a sense of community," says Blanchard. "I've made friends. I've found mentors and support. ey're never getting rid of me." Han says she has developed a new sense of confidence and believes she is "a step ahead of the game" when it comes to pre- paring for the future. "Unfortunately, when many new teachers are hired, they don't know what CTA is or what we're about," says Manion. "Hopefully, we're changing that." Amber Han says the APLE workshops have given her a new sense of confidence and helped prepare her for the future.
