In 1942, after refusing to go to U.S. incarceration camps for Japanese Americans, Korematsu was arrested and convicted of defying government orders. The Supreme Court ruled against his appeal in 1944, arguing that military necessity justified incarceration. In 1983, key intelligence documents were discovered that showed Japanese Americans had committed no acts of treason to justify mass incarceration, and Korematsu's conviction was overturned.
