Member Accolades C T A M E M B E R S keep racking up the recognition. A few recent highlights: We All Count! T H E F E D E R A L G O V E R N M E N T uses U.S. Census data to allocate billions of dollars in education funds to states and localities annually. So making sure everyone is counted in the census is critical to the well-being of children and the strength of our public schools. "Participation in the census is safe, important and necessary," says NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. Encourage your students to tell their parent or guardian to fill out their census questionnaire online (census.gov), by telephone or by mail. NEA offers relevant K-12 lesson plans and posters such as the one at left at nea.org/census. A Site to See A F T E R M O N T H S of hard work, dedication and member input, we are delighted to officially announce the launch of the newly designed CTA.org website on May 1, 2020! Our goal is to provide CTA members with a great user experience with a faster, easier to navigate, mobile friendly, visually appealing and interactive space that reflects the power and beauty of our union. El Cerrito Middle School visual arts teacher Angel Mejico is one of five American teachers in the top 50 shortlist for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2020 in part- nership with UNESCO. Mejico is a member of Corona-Norco Teachers Association and a 2019 California Teacher of the Year. The top 10 final- ists for the $1 million award will be announced in June, and the winner announced in October. San Joaquin Delta College Teach- ers Association's Social Justice Committee won the Stanback-Stroud Diversity Award from the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. The award honors its work on projects such as the Dreamers Success Center, Social Justice Radio Hour, and Pathway to Law Program. Folsom Middle School teacher Melissa Lawson, Folsom-Cordova Education Association, has been named a master teacher by National History Day. In partnership with nine other national master teachers and the Library of Congress, Lawson will contribute a chapter to a new guide- book that helps teachers navigate primary source validity, points of view, and missing narratives related to that source or overarching topic. 9 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 2 0
