I'm Here T H E N E A - L G B T Q + C A U C U S provides educators, ESPs and students with safe schools free of anti-LGBTQ+ bias and intolerance as well as education programs for all students. The caucus offers the "I'm Here" badge, which educators and other supporters can wear to let people know that you are a safe person with whom to discuss LGBTQ+ issues. A QR code on the back of the badge accesses the I'm Here Toolkit with links to a variety of LGBTQ+ issues, organizations and resources. Order your badge at nea-lgbtqc.org/whatisimhere.html. California Bill Supports LGBTQ+ Students C O - S P O N S O R E D B Y C T A , AB 5 (Zbur) is currently making its way through the legislative process. The bill requires public schools serving students in grades 7 through 12 to provide educators with the tools and training they need to support and meet the needs of LGBTQ+ students. As our "Building Safe and Brave Spaces" shows, some California educators have created environments where LGBTQ+ students can be their authentic selves. But many LGBTQ+ students still experience harassment, violence and lack of affirmation in school settings, harming their self-esteem, mental health and performance in school. Training can help educators recognize the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students, know their rights and provide support when needed. AB 5 has been approved by the Assembly (64-4), and at press time, is awaiting hearing by the Senate Rules Committee for assignment. —Julian Peeples 24 cta.org Feature
