EL DÍA DE LOS NIÑOS APRIL 30 E V E N T El Día de los Niños (Children's Day) is a traditional festival in Latino culture. Many public libraries have events to promote literacy on this day. DEMAND SAFE, INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS MAY 1 S TAT E W I D E D AY O F A C T I O N CTA leads a day of action at local school sites to support safe, nurturing schools for all students and to stand against attacks on public education and immi- grant rights. Join in and take the pledge. JOINT ETHNIC CAUCUS ISSUES CONFERENCE MAY 5–7 C O N F E R E N C E Marriott Manhattan Beach. "Be Proud, Be United, Be Engaged for California Public Schools." Open to all CTA members, the conference offers a wide variety of workshops on the issues of diversity and equity and how to advocate for change. Hotel cut-off date is April 21. NATIONAL TEACHER DAY MAY 9 E V E N T National Teacher Day is on Tuesday of National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 7–13). CALIFORNIA DAY OF THE TEACHER MAY 10 E V E N T California's celebration, arising from legislation co-sponsored by CTA and the Association of Mexican American Educa- tors, is patterned after the traditional Día del Maestro festival. SCHOOL NURSE DAY MAY 10 E V E N T Since 1972, National School Nurse Day has honored school nurses on the Wednesday of National Nurse Week (May 6–12). CTA ESP DAY MAY 23 E V E N T Recognize the vital contributions of edu- cation support professionals during ESP Week (May 21–27). Cesar Chavez Day California has an official state holiday on March 31, the birthday of labor leader Cesar Chavez. Learn about Chavez's life and philosophy and find activities and resources, including a link to the California Department of Education's model curriculum, at IFT GRANTS APRIL 30 A P P L I C AT I O N D E A D L I N E CTA Institute for Teaching's grant program shows what teachers can do when they have the freedom to create and invent. CTA members can apply for Educator Grants up to $5,000 and Impact Grants up to $20,000. Recent grantees include Imperial Valley Discovery Zone (Dan Gibbs, Imperial Teachers Association), where high schoolers facilitate teacher-generated, NGSS-aligned lessons for elementary students (above, left); and Babies and Beads (Stacy Williams, San Diego Education Association), which provides job training, mentoring, classes and career planning to at-risk students (above, right). 9 March 2017
