CALENDAR December 2021 / January 2022 Ed Roberts Day J A N . 2 3 I S Ed Roberts Day in California, honoring the "Father of Independent Living" on the day of his birth. Roberts, born in 1939 in San Mateo, was an international leader and educator in the independent living and disability rights movements. He fought throughout his life to enable all persons with disabilities to fully participate in society. Roberts was the first student with significant disabilities to attend UC Berkeley and was a founder of UCB's Physically Disabled Students Program. The program became the model for Berkeley 's Center for Independent Living (CIL) and over 400 independent living centers across the country; Roberts was an early director of CIL. He was also the California Depart- ment of Rehabilitation's first director with a disability and was co-founder and president of the World Institute on Disability. He died in 1995. O B S E R V E D E A C H Y E A R on the third Monday in January as "a day on, not a day off," MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. It honors Dr. King's life of service and encourages all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Students can participate in a multitude of ways, even during this pandemic. Youth Service America suggests ways in the illustration at left, but educators can also design their own day (or even semester) of service.
