LOS ANGELES: Citizens of the World Charter Schools Unionize Teachers at Citizens of the World charter schools (CWC), one of the largest charter networks in the country, have unionized under United Teachers Los Angeles. UTLA and CTA welcomed 170 members to the family in June when educators at seven Los Angeles charter schools voted to unionize — the first successful effort at an independent charter school chain in five years. "Citizens of the World Educators United seeks to grow our organiza- tion in a positive way," said CWC Silver Lake Elementary School teacher and UTLA member Nicole Barraza. "We desire nothing more than to work in partnership with our regional support office and family commu- nities to make our schools stronger. We believe there is another way to operate — a way that includes knowledgeable teachers' voices, for the betterment of our community and organization." Educators say the unionization effort will bring CWC into a better alignment with its stated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. "Our charter school has an amazing mission and core values. As educators, we want to preserve what we love about our schools and bring about positive changes that put students first," said Julia Hiser, a math interventionist at Citizens of the World Charter Hollywood. "When our expertise and our voices are central to decision-making, our students benefit." 42 cta.org Advocacy This offer is unique to this solicitation.
